The gymnasium located in the McPherson Community Building served as home court to the McPherson Globe Refiners Basketball team in the 1930s.

The team, sponsored by the local oil refinery, won the first-ever Olympic gold medal in 1936. Since those early days, McPherson has consistently produced state-winning high school teams. Many of those young women and men began their journey on a basketball court maintained by the City of McPherson or by the McPherson Family YMCA.
